The Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, and Chicago White Sox have finalized a three-team trade, which will see right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde join the Cardinals, injured utility player Tommy Edman head to the Dodgers, and a combination of prospects move to the White Sox. Additionally, White Sox reliever Michael Kopech is being traded to the Dodgers, while the Dodgers are sending Miguel Vargas to the White Sox. Veteran outfielder Tommy Pham is also returning to the Cardinals, where his MLB career began.
In more detail, the White Sox will receive Vargas, second baseman Jeral Perez, and infielder Alexander Albertus from the Dodgers.
Here’s a breakdown of the trade:
Dodgers receive:
UTL Tommy Edman
RHP Michael Kopech
Cardinals receive:
RHP Erick Fedde
OF Tommy Pham
White Sox receive:
OF Miguel Vargas
2B Jeral Perez
INF Alexander Albertus
Fedde, 31, has had a standout season for the White Sox in 2024. Over 121 2/3 innings, he has posted a 3.11 ERA with just one unearned run and a 3.18 K/BB ratio across 21 starts.
Prior to the trade deadline, CBS Sports ranked Fedde as the 15th most desirable trade target, noting his impressive comeback after a stint in South Korea. Fedde’s success is attributed to improvements in his pitch repertoire, including a sinker, cutter, sweeper, and changeup. He is under contract for the remainder of this season and through 2025 at $7.5 million annually.
For the Dodgers, Edman, 29, has been sidelined for the season due to a slow recovery from offseason wrist surgery and recent ankle issues. He is currently on a minor league rehab assignment but is expected to contribute significantly if he returns to full health. Edman, a switch-hitter, has a career slash line of .265/.319/.408 with an OPS+ of 99 and has averaged 14 home runs, 33 doubles, and 29 stolen bases per 162 games. Known for his defensive prowess, he has played multiple positions and won a Gold Glove in 2021. Edman’s contract includes the remainder of a $7 million salary for 2024 and a $9.5 million salary for 2025 before hitting free agency.
