Haynes King threw for 146 yards and added 54 on the ground to lead Georgia Tech to a stunning victory over the 10th-ranked Florida State Seminoles. The Yellow Jackets, who were 10.5-point underdogs, overcame an early Florida State attack to win on a walk-off field goal, 24-21. King managed the game well and showcased his running ability throughout.
The Seminoles started strong with a quick touchdown and a two-point conversion, giving the impression of a dominant day ahead. However, the Yellow Jackets responded with a methodical drive, capped by Zach Pyron’s one-yard rushing touchdown.
A key factor in the game was Georgia Tech’s revamped defense, which made crucial plays and contained Seminole quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei. The game was tied 14-14 at halftime after Florida State kicker Ryan Fitzgerald nailed a 59-yard field goal at the buzzer.
The third quarter was scoreless, but Yellow Jackets running back Jamal Haynes broke through with his second touchdown early in the fourth. Haynes was elusive all afternoon, showcasing his playmaking ability, and looks to be a challenge for opposing defenses this season.
Roydell Williams scored on a one-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth, marking the last time Florida State held the ball. Georgia Tech dominated the line of scrimmage in their final two drives, both lasting over six minutes, and sealed the victory with Aidan Birr’s game-winning 44-yard field goal.
This victory is a significant boost for the Yellow Jackets, who face a daunting schedule ahead. While it's too early to determine if Georgia Tech is a serious contender, they’ve started the season on a promising note.
In contrast, Florida State’s loss raises concerns. Once the favorite to win the ACC with national championship aspirations, the Seminoles now face questions about head coach Mike Norvell’s squad. The offense appeared stagnant at times, and the defense struggled to stop the run. Florida State will look to bounce back when they host Boston College on Labor Day. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech hosts Georgia State for their home opener.
