After the United State's 1-1 draw with New Zealand, it signals the end to their September camp. But not only the end of this international window, but the end of this cycle. And marks the opening of the gateway into a new era for the US. An era led by their new manager, Mauricio Pochettino; as the Federation and Pochettino himself, would make the appointment official via an announcement across their the social media platforms days before the official unveiling and press conference that took place today.
In a team spearheaded by the likes of ‘Captain America’ Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, and Weston McKennie, this national team and the way they will be perceived across the world will be one of significant change. That is all due to this very appointment, as it speaks to the ambition and project the Federation are trying to build. And certainly makes a statement to those who follow the sport across the United States.
The October International Break will be the very first window that Mauricio Pochettino will take charge of the USMNT, and has around a month to watch, observe, and decide who he sees to be in his plans for his first camp with these players. As this period of time until the next international break will be ‘an auditioning period’ for themselves as Pochettino assembles his plans together for his first squad.
But more significantly, he will be starting to figure out who will suit his style of play going forward into the future.
The former PSG, Tottenham and Chelsea manager has been renowned for his very specific style of play and system that relies on progressive play, high pressing, and intent to win the ball back high up the pitch. He plays in a ‘romantic style’, which means he prefers to play on the front foot. And taking the initiative to be on the ball, rather than sitting back in a more negative, pragmatic, and defensive shape.
However, there are going to be players in this pool of players that may find that he may not find himself active in the starting team due to not suiting the profile of player that Pochettino favors. And there will be players that may had been out of favor under previous managers (more specifically Gregg Berhalter), that could potentially now become a crucial player in the plans of Poch.
Mauricio Pochettino's first match in action and in charge will be against Panama, in just under one month's time, on October 12.
