Ladies’ Singles
The Ladies’ draw was blown wide open after Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff lost on consecutive days. Swiatek and Gauff were the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked women in the draw, respectively. Now, the 2022 champion, Elena Rybakina, is the favorite to be crowned champion. Rybakina takes on Elina Svitolina in her quarterfinal match on Wednesday. Emma Navarro, who defeated Gauff, faces Italian Jasmine Paolini in the quarterfinals. Paolini reached the finals of the French Open this year, while this is the farthest Navarro has made it in a Grand Slam tournament. Jelena Ostapenko plays Barbora Krejcikova, and qualifier Lulu Sun faces Donna Vekic.
There is an opportunity for an up-and-coming player to win a major with all the upsets in the Ladies' bracket. Both Navarro and Paolini have yet to win a major championship, but both have tremendous skills and potential. They play each other next, and it should be an exciting match.
The top half of the Ladies' draw includes all the former major champions, while the bottom half has none. This is certainly one of the more unpredictable draws in recent memory, but there are many great players looking to add a prestigious championship to their resumes.
Gentlemen’s Singles
The three favorites heading into the tournament, Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and Carlos Alcaraz, are still alive as the quarterfinals begin tomorrow. Sinner takes on Daniil Medvedev tomorrow morning, and Alcaraz faces American Tommy Paul. On the other side of the draw, Djokovic plays Alex de Minaur, and another American, Taylor Fritz, takes on Lorenzo Musetti. Fritz and Paul are looking to end a 21-year winless drought for American men in major championships. The last time an American won at Wimbledon was in 2000 when Pete Sampras claimed his seventh title.
Alcaraz and Sinner will face off for another battle in their young careers. Alcaraz defeated Sinner in the French Open semifinals en route to his third Grand Slam title. Djokovic can tie Roger Federer for the most Wimbledon championships with a victory, and it would be his 25th major championship, breaking a tie with Margaret Court for the most Grand Slam titles by a man or woman.
However, there is still a lot of tennis to be played, and some upsets are bound to happen. Tommy Paul has split four meetings with Alcaraz, and Taylor Fritz defeated the No. 4 seed, Alexander Zverev, in five sets today. Perhaps this is the year an American-born player can break through in London.
